512 000 cases of sexual assault, giving a rate of 1 977 incidents per 100 000 people aged 15 and over. Like most sexual assaults are not reported, the number of sexual assaults reported to the police is much lower, about 24 200 sexual offenses were recorded by police in 2007. Police data, which contain information on victims of all ages, show that in 2007 more than half (58%) of sexual assault victims were aged under 18, children under 12 years representing 25% of the victims. The vast majority of them were female (81%).
